Welcome to Hiroshima, a vibrant city on Japan’s Honshu Island, rich in history and culture. Once devastated by an atomic bomb during World War II, Hiroshima has risen from its ashes to become a symbol of peace and resilience.
A visit to Hiroshima would be incomplete without experiencing the poignant Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. This park commemorates the tragic events of 1945 and houses the iconic Atomic Bomb Dome, one of the few structures that remained standing near ground zero. Today, it stands as a powerful symbol of Hiroshima’s enduring spirit.
Another highlight is the majestic Itsukushima Shrine, one of Japan's most revered sites. This ancient Shinto shrine appears to float on water during high tide and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At low tide, you can walk out to the famous Torii Gate, touch its sturdy pillars, and toss coins for good luck. This unique experience is said to bring joy and prosperity to your life.

Hiroshima, a city with a profound history, is located on Japan’s largest island, Honshu. Established in 1589 by warlord Mori Terumoto, Hiroshima quickly grew into a bustling castle town. Its strategic location and prosperous economy made it a vital center for trade and industry.
However, Hiroshima's fate took a dramatic turn on August 6, 1945, when it became the first city in history to suffer an atomic bombing. The explosion caused unprecedented destruction, instantly killing tens of thousands of people and obliterating much of the city. This catastrophic event marked a turning point in World War II and left an indelible mark on global consciousness.
In the aftermath, Hiroshima embarked on an extraordinary journey of recovery and renewal. The city transformed itself into a beacon of peace, advocating for the abolition of nuclear weapons and promoting international peace and understanding. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, established in 1954, stands as a testament to this commitment, offering a place for reflection and remembrance.
Today, Hiroshima is a thriving metropolis that seamlessly blends its historical significance with modern attractions. Visitors can explore the city’s rich cultural heritage, enjoy its scenic beauty, and experience the resilience and hope that define Hiroshima’s spirit.
Today we will go over the pass to another part of the route. We will pack our things into a minibus that will take backpacks and suitcases to the next hotel. And we will make the transition to the old town with small backpacks. The distance is short - only 10 km, but there is a solid height difference - 1100 meters. We spend the night in a hotel and settle down for the last evening in the mountains.
