Welcome to Fukuoka, a vibrant city on Japan’s Kyushu Island, known for its dynamic blend of tradition and modernity. Fukuoka’s rich history, bustling urban culture, and stunning natural landscapes offer visitors an unforgettable experience.
Fukuoka has long been a gateway to the Asian continent, playing a significant role in Japan’s history. Originally two separate cities, the port city of Hakata and the samurai town of Fukuoka, they merged in 1889 to form the modern metropolis of Fukuoka. This dual heritage is still evident today, with distinct districts that offer a mix of historical charm and contemporary flair.
During the Edo period, Fukuoka prospered as a castle town under the rule of the Kuroda clan. Its strategic location made it a key center for trade and commerce. In more recent history, Fukuoka has emerged as a hub of innovation and culture, known for its festivals, food, and friendly atmosphere.
Begin your journey with a visit to the Fukuoka Castle Ruins, located in Maizuru Park. Once a majestic stronghold of the Kuroda clan, the ruins now offer a peaceful retreat with panoramic views of the city. Explore the remnants of the castle walls and turrets, and enjoy the park’s lush greenery, which is especially beautiful during cherry blossom season.
Next, head to Ohori Park, a scenic oasis in the heart of Fukuoka. This expansive park features a large pond, beautifully landscaped gardens, and walking paths. Rent a paddleboat or simply relax by the water, taking in the serene surroundings.
For a taste of modern Fukuoka, visit Canal City Hakata, a sprawling shopping and entertainment complex. With its unique design, vibrant atmosphere, and variety of shops, restaurants, and theaters, Canal City offers something for everyone. Don’t miss the dynamic water fountain shows held throughout the day.
Step back into the past with a visit to Kushida Shrine, one of Fukuoka’s oldest and most important Shinto shrines. Dedicated to the deity of Hakata, the shrine is the focal point of the famous Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival, held every July. Admire the intricate carvings, traditional architecture, and learn about the shrine’s rich history.
End your day with a trip to Fukuoka Tower, the city’s tallest seaside tower. Standing at 234 meters, the tower offers breathtaking views of Fukuoka and the surrounding Hakata Bay. Visit at sunset to see the city illuminated in a golden glow, or enjoy the night view with the twinkling lights of the urban landscape.
No visit to Fukuoka is complete without sampling its culinary specialties. Indulge in a bowl of Hakata ramen, known for its rich, creamy tonkotsu (pork bone) broth. Explore the yatai (street food stalls) along the Nakasu River, where you can savor local favorites like yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), motsunabe (offal hotpot), and mentaiko (spicy cod roe).
